The Order to Apply Your Skincare Products (Morning & Night)

The Order to Apply Your Skincare Products (Morning & Night)

You've invested in a cleanser, a serum, maybe even a specialty eye cream — but if you're applying them in the wrong order, you may not be getting the full benefit from any of them. The good news is that once you understand the basic rule, the order becomes easy to remember: go from thinnest to thickest, and always end your morning routine with sun protection.

Step 1 — Cleanser. Every routine, morning and night, begins with a clean canvas. A gentle cleanser removes overnight buildup, excess oil, makeup, and environmental debris that can block what comes next. Skipping this step — or using a cleanser that's too harsh — can compromise everything that follows.

Step 2 — Toner. Toners often get skipped, but a well-formulated one may help balance your skin's pH and lightly prep the surface so serums absorb more readily. Apply it while your skin is still slightly damp, pressing it in gently with your hands or a soft cotton pad.

Step 3 — Serums. This is where the real targeted work happens. Serums are lightweight, highly concentrated formulas designed to address specific concerns like uneven tone, fine lines, hydration, or brightening. Because they're water-based and thin, they need to go on before heavier products — otherwise a thicker moisturizer can act like a barrier and block absorption. If you're using more than one serum, apply the thinnest formula first and allow each one a moment to settle before the next.

Step 4 — Eye Cream. The skin around your eyes is some of the most delicate on your face, and eye creams are typically formulated with that in mind. Apply a small amount using your ring finger — which naturally applies the lightest pressure — and pat gently around the orbital bone. Doing this before your moisturizer helps ensure the eye area gets the specific care it needs rather than just a thin layer of your regular face cream.

Step 5 — Moisturizer. Think of your moisturizer as the layer that seals everything underneath it in place. It helps support the skin barrier and keeps hydration from evaporating throughout the day or night. Choose a formula suited to your skin type — something lightweight for oily or combination skin, something richer if your skin tends to feel tight or dry, especially during Michigan winters.

Step 6 — SPF (Morning Only). Sunscreen is the most important step in your daytime routine, full stop. UV exposure is one of the leading contributors to premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and long-term skin damage — even on cloudy days here in Macomb County. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as the very last step in the morning, over your moisturizer, every single day.

At night, skip the SPF and consider adding a treatment product like a retinol or peptide cream after your moisturizer if your provider has recommended one. Nighttime is when your skin does most of its repairing, so this is a great window to support that process with nourishing ingredients.

One thing worth noting: not every product combination works well for every skin type, and some active ingredients require a bit more guidance on how and when to layer them safely. If you're unsure whether your current routine is actually working for your skin, a professional consultation can bring real clarity.
